Surgery Residency Program Director
Thank you for your interest in our Surgical Residency Program. Our General Surgery Residency Program is a five-year program that provides residents with a broad experience in surgery. The program is well rounded with an excellent balance of clinical training, structured education, and research opportunities. The main goal is to prepare the resident for a career in community surgical practice, academic surgery, or post-residency fellowship training.
There are currently 20 approved categorical positions, and 4 approved preliminary positions in the general surgery residency program. Rotations during the five years include the general surgery services, trauma services, and surgical specialty services at Brandon Regional Hospital, Blake Medical Center, Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, and Largo Medical Center.
The general surgery program welcomed its inaugural class in the 2018-2019 academic year taking on 4 preliminary PGY1 residents, 4 categorical PGY1 residents, and 4 categorical PGY2 residents. The program is now in its third year with 18 total residents: 3 PGY4, 3 PGY3, 4 PGY2, 4 PGY1 and 4 preliminary residents. For the upcoming 2021-2022 academic year the program will be seeking to fill 4 categorical PGY1 slots, and 4 preliminary PGY1 slots.
