Brandon, Florida - Brandon Regional Hospital recently celebrated the opening of their new Advanced Wound and Plastic Surgery Center that will provide advanced services for the treatment of chronic and non-healing wounds. The new Advanced Wound and Plastic Surgery Center is located inside of the hospital, and offers both surgical and non-surgical treatments. Inpatient and outpatient services will be available to the community.

Surgical treatment options for patients in the Advanced Wound and Plastic Surgery Center include abdominal wall reconstruction, breast reconstruction, hand and extremity reconstruction, lower extremity reconstruction, microvascular free tissue transfer, and scalp reconstruction.

Two state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen chambers are the centerpieces of the new wound clinic.

Two state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen chambers are the centerpieces of the new wound clinic. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to treat serious wound infections, diabetic wounds, radiation injury, thermal burn wounds, decompression sickness that results from scuba diving, air bubbles in blood vessels, carbon monoxide poisoning, and anemia due to severe blood loss. Patients receive 100-percent pressurized oxygen in the chambers. This oxygen therapy provides multiple benefits, including increased wound healing, increased circulation, collagen growth, new white blood cells, and new blood vessels.

In addition to the advanced surgical options and hyperbaric chambers, the outpatient wound clinic will provide patients with care for skin grafts, wound consultations and wound dressing changes, and debridement or removal of damaged tissue. The center features private treatment rooms and nurses and technicians who are certified in wound care.

The Medical Director of the Advanced Wound and Plastic Surgery Center is Juan Socas, M.D., International Microsurgery Scholar and Fellowship Trained Plastic Surgeon. Dr. Socas has been a practicing plastic surgeon since 2011 and his career highlights and leadership experience include a Plastic Surgery Fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine, several medical director appointments, and advanced training in microsurgery, plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery.

"We are extremely proud of the new level of advanced care for patients who are suffering from non-healing wounds at Brandon Regional Hospital's new Advanced Wound and Plastic Surgery Center," says Alan Harmatz, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at Brandon Regional Hospital. "Our highly skilled team, led by Dr. Juan Socas, coupled with the advanced technology and facilities, means we can now be the provider of choice for patients who previously had to travel outside of the area for these specialized services."
