Dr. Sam Scolaro Named 2009 Physician of the Year

     BRANDON, Florida - (January 5, 2010) - - Sam E. Scolaro, D.O., a Valrico Family/General Practice physician, has been named the Jeffrey A. Floch, M.D., Physician of the Year, according to Mike Fencel, Chief Executive Officer of Brandon Regional Hospital. Dr. Scolaro has been practicing in the Brandon area for more than 35 years and is one of the original members of the hospital’s medical staff.

     “Dr. Scolaro’s dedication to medicine, his patients and our hospital is exceptional,” said Fencel.  “Upon completing his medical training, he chose to practice in Brandon and we are so fortunate that he has dedicated his entire career to our community.”

     Over the years, Dr. Scolaro has served on numerous county and state medical associations and societies. He was named the 2009 Distinguished Service Award winner by the Florida Academy of Osteopathy, where he spent four years as President and ten years on the Board.  He was also President of the Hillsborough County Osteopathic Medical Society, which honored him as their Physician of the Year in 1998. Dr. Scolaro’s hospital leadership included being elected multiple times as Chairman for the Department of Family Practice and serving on the Medical Executive Committee. 

     Members of the hospital’s medical staff nominated Dr. Scolaro for this award and his wife Janie was on hand for the presentation.     

     Dr. Scolaro is the tenth recipient of this award, created by the Floch family to honor a physician who exemplifies the characteristics practiced by Jeffrey Floch, M.D.  The selected physician is a clinician who exhibits outstanding humanistic qualities of honesty, compassion and loyalty to his or her patients. 

     Jeffrey Floch, M.D., was a practicing Obstetrician/Gynecologist in Brandon who lost his battle with cancer on November 23, 1999.  He is survived by his wife Yvette and daughter Cassandra.
