A patient, in some cases has options based on condition and recommendation of physician as to what surgery would be the best alternative. The two types of surgery are traditional surgery and endoscopic or minimally invasive surgery. Below is information on the two types of surgery but all options must be discussed with your physician.
Traditional Surgery
Traditional open back surgery was the required method of back surgery for many years. It requires a large incision and may require the patient to stay in the hospital for multiple days with a longer recovery. As with any surgery, there is pain is associated with traditional open back surgery.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally invasive spine surgery is also referred to as endoscopic back surgery. Endoscopic surgery does not require a large incision. The surgeon manipulates the endoscope and specialized surgical instruments through small working tubes. The surgeon is able to see the condition on a display screen and is able to repair the damage.
In some cases, the patient can enter the hospital in the morning for surgery and leave that same day if there are no complications. As in all surgeries, there is a certain level of pain. Not everyone is a candidate for endoscopic or minimally invasive surgery. You must discuss your conditions and options with your physician.
Conditions that may be treated by minimally invasive surgery:
- Spinal fusion, which is often performed on degenerative disks
- Deformity corrections, such as for scoliosis
- Repair of herniated disks
- Decompression of spinal tumors
- Repair and stabilization of vertebral compression fractures
The benefits of minimally invasive spine surgery may include the following:
- A few smaller scars
- Shorter hospital stay - in some cases, same day surgical stay
- Reduced post pain
- Shorter recovery time
- Less blood loss during surgery
- Reduced risk of infection
Not everyone is a candidate for endoscopic or minimally invasive surgery. You must discuss your conditions and options with your physician.
